In 18th-century France, a roguish ne'er-do-well masquerades as an actor in a plot to avenge the death of his friend who was killed during a duel with a master swordsman. The film is famous for one of the longest sword fights in cinema history. Lewis Stone costars as Georges de Valmorin and played villainous Marquis de la Tour d'Azyr in the 1923 silent version.
