February STEAM Lab: Pump It Up! How Your Heart Works
Step into the role of young biologists this February and uncover the incredible science behind the human heart! In this hands-on lab, participants will explore how their own hearts work by measuring their pulse, collecting real data, and seeing how activity changes heart rate. Then kids will build a colorful inflatable heart model using straws, pipe cleaners, and a zip-top bag to watch their heart “pump” with every breath they blow inside.
Along the way, we’ll explore heart anatomy, blood flow, and why the heart beats faster when we move. It’s an exciting blend of biology and engineering that helps young learners understand their bodies in a whole new way!
This STEAM Lab at the Prescott Valley Public Library, in partnership with Yavapai Exploration and Science, is designed for youth ages 5–12 and encourages curiosity, observation, and critical thinking—perfect for young scientists who love to experiment and explore.
