November STEAM Lab: What’s Starchy in My Snack?

Step into the role of food scientists this November and uncover the hidden science in your snacks! In this hands-on lab, participants will use iodine to test everyday foods—like potatoes, bananas, bread, and rice—to discover which ones are packed with starch. Kids will make predictions, conduct tests, and observe dramatic color changes as science reveals what’s really inside their favorite foods.

Along the way, we’ll explore carbohydrates, chemical reactions, and why plants store starch. It’s a tasty twist on science that’s equal parts fun and fascinating!

This STEAM Lab at the Prescott Valley Public Library, in partnership with Yavapai Exploration and Science, is designed for youth ages 8+ and encourages curiosity, observation, and critical thinking—perfect for young scientists who love to experiment and explore.
